Windows 11 Storage settings displaying categories that use disk space

How to Free Up Storage on Windows 11

Introduction

When your Windows 11 drive runs low on space, updates may fail and apps may run into problems. Before deleting files manually, find out what is using your storage. Windows includes tools that can identify temporary files, large apps, and other categories that may be safe to clean up.

See what is using your storage

Open Settings, select System, and choose Storage. Windows will calculate how much space is used by installed apps, temporary files, documents, and other categories. Select a category to review its contents before removing anything.

Remove temporary files carefully

In Storage, open Temporary files. Review the list and select only the categories you want to remove. Read each description carefully. Downloads may contain files you still need, so do not select that category without checking its contents. When ready, choose Remove files.

Turn on Storage Sense

Storage Sense can automatically clear certain temporary files and manage items in the Recycle Bin according to your settings. Find it under Settings > System > Storage. Configure the schedule and review what it will remove. If you use cloud storage, understand how its local-file options work before enabling automatic cleanup.

Uninstall apps you no longer use

Open Settings, choose Apps, and then Installed apps. Sort the list by size if that option is available. Uninstall programs you recognize and no longer need. Do not remove drivers or unfamiliar system components simply because they occupy space.

Find and move large personal files

Check your Videos, Downloads, Pictures, and Documents folders for large files you no longer need. Move important photos or videos to an external drive or a trusted cloud service after confirming that the transfer completed. Keep another backup for files that matter. Empty the Recycle Bin only after reviewing its contents.

Avoid risky cleanup shortcuts

Do not manually delete files from Windows or Program Files folders to reclaim space. Avoid registry cleaners and unknown cleanup tools that promise dramatic results. If storage remains low, consider a larger drive or moving large personal libraries to a separate drive.

Conclusion

Use Windows Storage settings to identify what is taking up space, clear temporary files carefully, uninstall unused apps, and move large personal files after backing them up. A quick monthly review can help prevent the drive from filling up again.
